Shell out at Snail Race for Wheely Big Appeal

It will be ready, steady, Escar-go as racing snails take to the starting line to help raise money to buy new wheelchairs for patients at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Edward and Carol Manning have organised a Snail Race Night at Three Holes Village Hall on Saturday, February 24, to support the Hospital’s Wheely Big Appeal.

The Hospital has raised more than £16,000 towards its £25,000 target to buy 30 new wheelchairs to help patients get around the Gayton Road site.

A total of 64 snails will be heading for the finish line during the eight races which will be taking place on the night from 7.30pm.

Mr Manning, who lives in Three Holes, said: “The event will be similar to horse racing but with snails. People will be able to sponsor a snail and bet on it during the night.

“We are hoping to raise between £500 and £800 to help the hospital and it should be a really good night.”

People will not have to shell out a lot as tickets cost just £5, including a sausage and chip supper. Tickets need to be ordered in advance to help with catering. To book please contact Mr Manning on 01945 773961 or 07867 978830. There is also a licensed bar.

The Wheely Big Appeal is fundraising for 30 new unique wheelchairs fitted with: sturdy sliding foot rests, fixed IV poles and calf/leg supports for patients.
