Trauma team trooping 100km to fundraise for two charities

Eight colleagues from our emergency department are hoping to fundraise £3,000 in the 100km Trailwalker 2018.
To complete the challenge Trauma Troopers, as they are known, have to cover the distance on the hilly South Downs Way in less than 30 hours. That has required a good deal of training, including a two-day session in April along some of the course.

The eight walkers – Lizzie Bastin, Julie Bottle, Heidi Bunn, Leanne Crawford, Lisa Moxham, Sharon Robinson, Kate Stacey and Tracy Wood – will have a support crew of five – Lesley Allard, Maria Parker, Laura Shepherd, Nicki Smart and Sharon’s partner John Nobbs, who are all planning to clock up a few miles too.

Lizzie said: “Everyone in the team is used to being on their feet for 12-hour shifts but we all do fitness training in different ways.
“None of us are super-fit – except for Heidi who will often do an 18-mile run before she does a night shift!
“A few of us completed The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge last year and we wanted to do something else this year – a new challenge while raising some money for charity.”

Trauma Troopers are already halfway to their fundraising target for Oxfam and The Gurkha Welfare Trust. The challenge takes place in Hampshire and Sussex between July 13 and 15 and the two teams of four from Team QEH plan to walk the entire distance without a power nap.

Lizzie added: “It’s been difficult to get time off all together for training. We’ve done a few long walks but Norfolk is not known for its hills! That’s why we all went for a training session at the South Downs.
“It was very hot but very beautiful. We’re looking forward to returning in July for Trailwalker.”

A lottery in the A&E department raised £150 towards the total and several fundraising functions including a raffle and a charity pub quiz night are being planned.
