Your newborn child: all you need to know

Classes provided by QEH for pregnant women and new mums are being refreshed and relaunched.

We’re hoping to attract more women and their partners to the classes, which are provided free of charge in places including King’s Lynn, Downham Market and Swaffham. In particular we would like to increase the number of people attending ante-natal classes.

Infant feeding specialist Jayne Cozens, a midwife at QEH for 26 years, said: “We want to give women and their partners as much information as possible so that they can make an informed choice on how they would like to feed their baby.

“We know that there are some women who decide that they are going to formula feed their baby and so they do not to come to ante-natal classes. But there is lots of information in these classes for all mums, regardless of how they are going to feed their baby.

“We don’t want women to feel pressurised into breastfeeding – our job is to give them an informed choice. As long as mum is happy and baby is fed that’s all we are concerned with.”

Among other things, the classes cover these elements which all mums need to know:

  • responsive feeding
  • feeding cues
  • how to know that baby is getting enough milk
  • pace feeding
  • patterns of feeding – what to expect in the first few weeks
  • skin to skin
  • sterilisation of equipment

The current Breastfeeding Workshops will be renamed Newborn Feeding Class from September to better reflect the content.
