QEH celebrates its staff and volunteers at special awards night
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital has announced the winners of its annual awards at a special annual awards evening held on Thursday 17 March to celebrate the amazing work of its staff and volunteers.
Professor Steve Barnett, QEH Chairman said: “Our awards evening held an extra special meaning after the last few years – everyone at Team QEH has worked so hard, consistently going above and beyond in exceptionally challenging circumstances during the pandemic to provide the best possible care for our patients.
“We heard many moving stories which highlighted examples of outstanding patient care, inspirational support and leadership, excellent teamwork and how living our values of kindness, wellness and fairness has made a significant difference to the lives of our patients and their families – and so much more.”
Originally planned to be held in person, the difficult decision was taken to move the event online and hold a virtual awards ceremony due to rising cases of COVID at QEH and across King’s Lynn and West Norfolk. The nominees, their friends and families, other members of staff and a range of partners and external stakeholders joined a live feed where 16 awards in total were presented, covering areas such as patient safety and leader of the year, to the outstanding achievement in education and research and living the Trust’s values.
This year, the public chose the winner of two awards:
The ‘We Care’ award went to Salman Kidwai, an Obstetrics Consultant who works with people expecting a baby. He always goes above and beyond to ensure his patients understand the care they are receiving, have a voice in their care and feel safe and involved. As one woman put in her nomination: “Salman’s level of care, his kindness and the time he has for his patients is amazing. He is an asset to QEH and I thank him so much for the care he showed to me and my family and for getting my baby here safely.”
The ’Clinical Team of the Year’ award was awarded to the Research and Development Team who have been outstanding in the past year in response to the COVID pandemic crisis. Their work recruiting to crucial trials has directly contributed to the discovery of vital treatments for COVID-19 – a fantastic achievement for a small district general hospital. The Trust definitely punches above its weight in this area.
The awards night ended on a particularly special award that was asked for by the judging panel due to the exceptional work delivered in support of QEH staff during the pandemic. The Special Recognition Award for Services for the Wellbeing of Staff was awarded to the Clinical Psychology Team who superbly supported their colleagues through very challenging times by providing dedicated inhouse support. They were one of the first teams in the country to do this.

Inclusion Champion This recognises an individual who promotes equality, diversity and inclusion for patients and staff.

Outstanding Achievement in Education or Research This goes to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional dedication or creative thinking in their work to develop or improve services for our patients.

We Care The winner of this award is chosen by the public. It goes to an individual who consistently displays a positive attitude towards their work, delivers outstanding, patient-centred care, and strives to achieve excellent patient experience.

Chairman’s Award for Developing Against the Odds This award is personally selected by the Chairman and it recognises a member of Team QEH who has succeeded in developing both professionally and personally through adversity.
