Dr Rebecca Martin, an experienced leader with a sharp focus on high quality patient-centred care, is set to become the new Medical Director at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn.
It is anticipated she will take up her position in early autumn following a highly competitive recruitment process in April that involved executive colleagues, governors, staff and stakeholders.
In making the announcement Chief Executive Alice Webster said: “I am delighted that we have managed to secure such a high calibre medical director at a pivotal time for our organisation. Rebecca is a strong medical leader, with a clear vision and dedication to create a culture of openness and learning, where colleagues are supported to be highly effective and responsive to patient needs.
“She will be a tremendous asset to Team QEH and will deliver a clinical transformation and innovation. On behalf of the executive team, we are all very much looking forward to working with her. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Raghu for his work as Acting Medical Director.”
Dr Martin is currently the Chief Medical Officer at East Kent University Hospital Foundation Trust. Commenting on her appointment she said: “I am thrilled to be joining Team QEH. The Medical Director role presents an exciting opportunity for me to bring my experience from my current and previous roles to extend my influence and use my experience in a Trust undertaking clinical transformation to deliver its ambition to be the best rural district general hospital for patient and staff experience.”
Her role at QEH comes with a broad remit of responsibilities. Among them are:
- Professional leadership to medical staff and development of the medical workforce
- Supporting the delivery of the Electronic Patient Record system
- Supporting the use of technology and digital innovation to enhance service delivery, streamlining processes and supporting quality and efficiency
- Develop the Trust’s approach to clinical standards and clinical prioritisation
- Working with the Director of Strategy and Integration to implement the Acute Clinical Strategy between the QEH and other acute trusts in the Norfolk and Waveney system
Background
A leading consultant anaesthetist specialising in burns anaethesia and intensive care, Dr Martin worked at Mid Essex Hospital Trust in Chelmsford for almost 17 years, – three of them as Deputy Medical Director.
In February 2020 she joined East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust as its Chief Medical Officer just days after the government announced there would be a review into maternity and neonatal services led by Dr Bill Kirkup.
Dr Martin reflected: “Throughout this time I have worked in partnership with the Chief Nursing Officer, local leadership teams and external stakeholders to gain a deep understanding of the challenges and make substantial changes, putting women and families at the heart of their care.
“The report was profoundly harrowing to read and I continue to reflect on the significant impact on patents, communities and staff. On a personal level I have taken substantial learning from this experience, and I believe this has made be a better leader.”
She graduated from the University of Nottingham and completed her specialist training at the Nottingham and East Midlands School of Anaesthesia.
Dr Martin was Consultant in Burns Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Mid Essex Hospitals, Chelmsford in 2003.
She was the Clinical Lead for Burns ITU and a member of the Executive Committee of the British Burn Association, the National Organiser and Course Director for the ‘Emergency Management of Severe Burns’ course and a member of the Clinical Reference Group for Burns.
During this time she supported revision of National Burn Care Standards and was a panel member for the Confidential Enquiry into Major Burns in Children.
She was appointed and served for six years as Royal College of Anaesthetists Tutor.
