The QEH is celebrating after one of its medical wards – Feltwell – has been shortlisted for two categories in the prestigious 2023 Nursing Times Awards which recognise those making nursing innovative, patient-focused, and inclusive.
The ward is in the running for both the Care of the Older People Award and Patient Safety Improvement Award for their delivery of the ‘Let’s Get Moving’ initiative – part of the Emergency Care Improvement Support Team’s (ECIST) National Reconditioning Games.
The initiative was implemented Trust-wide to inspire teams to develop innovative ideas for preventing patient deconditioning and to establish a ‘joyful’ workplace environment.
Karon Strong, Head of Nursing for the Division of Medicine and lead facilitator behind the Let’s Get Moving initiative, said: “I am so proud of all of our teams across the Trust who have got behind this important campaign in which Feltwell are leading the way.
“All disciplines across Feltwell Ward and throughout the Trust have united with a clear purpose and are motivated to share innovative ideas and embrace new methods of working. Patients and relatives have also crucial in developing ideas for ward-based activities which were implemented such as bingo, painting, drawing and crosswords.”
Patients were also actively involved in creative planning for the King’s Coronation this year which included adorning the ward with decorations to evoke a lively street party ambience.
Alice Webster, Chief Executive at QEH, said: “These high-profile national awards receive hundreds of entries every year and being shortlisted recognises that Team QEH’s nursing initiatives are contributing to innovation in the profession, inclusivity in the workplace, and patient safety and wellbeing – all of which reinforce our values of kindness, wellness, and fairness in action.”
This is our third year of being shortlisted for these awards, showing that we are consistently making remarkable contributions to the nursing profession – and importantly making the QEH a better place to work.
Being recognised by the Nursing Times is fantastic news for both teams – and is again endorsement that we are well on our way to becoming the best rural District General Hospital for patient and staff experience.

The winners of the Nursing Times Awards will be announced in October 2023 at a ceremony in London.
