A big-hearted brother has raised £1,200 as a way of giving back to The QEH’s cancer care and treatment centre which looked after his sister so well.
Breast cancer patient Sarah Ringwood, 38 from North Wootton and mum of two, was diagnosed in June 2022 and treated at QEH’s Macmillan Unit – the hospital’s cancer care and treatment centre. After several rounds of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, she is now cancer free.
Her brother Gary Smith was so grateful for the care his big sister received that he took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for the unit. He smashed his original target, and the money is still coming in.
The 36 year old from Wiggenhall St Mary said: “I’m delighted with how much we raised. The amount of support from friends is amazing and everyone has been really generous.”
“Sarah spent a lot of time at the cancer unit and received amazing care from the entire team. They helped and supported her with so much and I really wanted to give something back to say thanks. I thought about organising an event and then I heard about the Thee Peaks Challenge and thought now is the best time.”
The Yorkshire Three Peaks is a 24-mile round trip route and includes a 5,200ft ascent.
Speaking about the challenge, Gary said: “I was really pleased to finish, and we completed the challenge in good time. It’s usually a 12-hour hike and my team and I completed it in 10 hours.”
