QEH applies for planning to relocate helipad as part of enabling works for new hospital

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn (QEH) has taken another key step forward in the Trust’s journey to a new hospital as they submit a planning application to relocate the QEH helipad.

The relocation of this essential facility forms part of enabling work to make way for a new hospital for King’s Lynn and West Norfolk after it was announced at the end of May that QEH has been added to the Government’s New Hospital Programme.

Subject to planning permission, the helipad, which is currently on the top end of the hospital site, will be relocated to farmland to the east of the hospital on the opposite side of the road along the B1145.

This project is a key step in the start of the Trust’s journey towards a new hospital as the relocation will allow for phase two of the multi-storey car park. Work will begin on phase one of the multi-storey car park in Autumn this year on the site of the old Inspire Centre which was demolished in June. The second phase is expected to begin in January 2025 and the helipad relocation is a key project to allow this work to begin.

Paul Brooks, Director of Estates and Facilities, said: “This planning application submitted to the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk is a real milestone in our journey towards bringing a state-of-the-art hospital to King’s Lynn. The application sets out our plans to relocate this vital resource to a nearby site whilst still ensuring patient safety and quality of care.

“We are working with key partners invested in this area to ensure this relocation works for all involved.”

If planning is approved, and with works to prepare the area, it is anticipated the new helipad will be ready for use by Spring 2024.
