‘Outstanding’ – QEH’s new Endoscopy Unit judged to be delivering highest standards of care

The QEH is celebrating after its new Endoscopy Unit is formally being re-accredited with a prestigious accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians, demonstrating it is delivering the highest levels of care and standards.

The Endoscopy Unit, which opened in September 2022, carries out a range of procedures that allow clinicians to see inside the body to investigate symptoms, confirm diagnoses and even deliver some kinds of treatments.

The unit underwent a rigorous two-day inspection earlier this year to achieve the Royal College’s JAG (Joint Advisory Group) Status.

JAG sets standards for competence in endoscopic procedure ensuring high standards in clinical quality encompassing safe and effective diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management.

Accreditation also focuses on patient experience, scrutinising the service’s role in providing efficient and patient-centred care for all patients, reviewing waiting times, facilities and the environment.

JAG status also checks the effectiveness of the endoscopy workforce, that there is effective training and support for staff, including the recruitment, retention and continued professional development of team members.

The accreditation, which also extends to QEH’s sister site North Cambridgeshire Hospital Wisbech (NCH), is a fantastic demonstration of the Trust’s continuous improvement journey to providing a safe and high-quality service for patients and their families.

The Trust’s endoscopy service was regarded as ‘outstanding’ with no key actions or advisories from the JAG accessors.

Alexandra Harris, Endoscopy Unit Manager at QEH, said: “This is fantastic news for QEH, recognising the hard work and dedication of our teams who consistently ensure that our patients receive the very best care and experience possible.

“This accreditation assures our patients, and their families, that the care they receive is both high-quality and safe, and that’s exactly what we want for all of our patients.”

The new state-of-the-art Endoscopy Unit was built using digital design and new innovations and technology to improve patient care and experience, and this new accreditation is another step forward in the hospital achieving its ambition of ‘being the best rural District General Hospital for patient and staff experience’.

Dr Shailesh Karanth, Gastroenterologist Consultant said: “This is a very proud moment for the hospital. This recognition is highly rewarding to the Endoscopy teams at both QEH and NCH and is a testament to their hard-work and dedication.”

Ends.
