Spades in the ground for new QEH Diagnostic Centre

A sharper focus on diagnostic imaging is one step closer for patients at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn (QEH) as work begins on a state-of-the-art Diagnostic Centre.

Spades went in the ground earlier this month to start building the new centre which will drive forward a reduction in waiting times by increasing capacity of diagnostic imaging for outpatients. The Diagnostic Centre will house cutting-edge MRI and CT scanners as well as X-ray and Ultrasound imaging used for diagnosis and monitoring of a very wide range of conditions – including cancer, heart disease and respiratory conditions.

Carly West-Burnham, Director of Strategy and Integration, said: “This is a proud day for our patients and everyone here at Team QEH as we celebrate the start of a building that has been many months in the planning. This dedicated centre will provide some much-needed additional imaging capacity which will in turn reduce waiting times as well as providing faster imaging capacity leading to earlier diagnosis, so ultimately improving health outcomes for our patients.

“This collaborative project with the three acute hospital sites in Norfolk and Waveney showcases partnership working at its best. We will be working to standardise practices and work collaboratively to transform how imaging and other diagnostic services are provided for the whole of Norfolk and Waveney.”

Contractors R G Carter began work earlier this month on the site and the Diagnostic Centre is expected to be fully operational by summer 2024. The centre is located at the entrance to The QEH site on the left-hand side.

Darren Vincent, Construction Manager at R G Carter said: “We are extremely proud of our ongoing relationship with The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and to be continuing to help achieve their future vison to improve and enhance vital healthcare provisions in King’s Lynn and the surrounding area. It is great to be celebrating the start of construction on the new Diagnostic Centre with all those involved, and we look forward to delivering the positive benefits this facility will bring to both the NHS and the local community.”

This project was announced by the Department of Health and Social Care in June this year with an £85.9 million capital investment to build three new facilities across Norfolk and Waveney – one at The QEH – and additional similar facilities to be based at the James Paget University Hospitals and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals.
