The League of Friends gift new cots for Maternity Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital

An improved bonding experience and reduced movement after caesareans sections are just a couple of benefits newly purchased cots already being used on The QEH maternity ward are bringing to new parents – all thanks to The League of Friends Charity.

Now operational in the QEH’s Central Delivery Suite and Brancaster ward, the 12 new cots are specially designed to be positioned over a new parent’s bed for easy access and better engagement to their little bundle of joy.

The League of Friends have generously funded these additional cots – which will replace the traditional shaped with a sturdy metal frame. The newly funded cots come with an adjustable height and can be positioned over the hospital bed so that parents can easily interact with their babies without moving too much.

Deborah Ramsdale, Midwifery Matron for Women and Children, explains: “To be able to have your baby closer and not have to stretch and twist to the side of the bed is a real help following a caesareans section. These cots will make a real difference for our families.”

Dad Joe, Mum Beth and big sister Zara meeting new baby Bradley

Beth Andrews and Joe Dann are one of the families already enjoying the benefits of this new purchase – after the birth of their new baby boy, Bradley, on Monday 25 September. Beth commented: “The new cots are a lot nicer than the old ones because you’re closer to the baby and they’re easier to get to, especially if you’ve had an epidural. I wish I had one for my first baby.”

Penny Hipkin, League of Friends Chair, said: “It’s wonderful to be able to support new families by providing these cots – to make life just that little bit easier in their stay in hospital with a new born baby. Purchases like this are exactly what the League of Friends is here for and it’s wonderful we can support patients in this way.”

A big thank you to the League of Friends who this year celebrated an incredible 70 years of supporting the hospital, for this generous donation.
