Justyna Redhead, a proud mum of one from Grimston, wanted to personally handover the proceeds of a traditional shooting event held in memory of her late husband Mark.
Mark was a 43-year-old electrician from Grimston who died in 2018, seven years after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Justyna, supported by Mark’s friends and family, have been staging regular fundraising events in his memory.
Justyna said it would have been Mark’s wish that money raised would go to The QEH as his local hospital. He was not treated in King’s Lynn but did have initial tests here before care transferred to Addenbrooke’s in Cambridge. He had a love of sport and outdoor pursuits and was captain of his local cricket team.
Justyna, a data co-ordinator came to The QEH on Valentine’s Day to hand over the proceeds of the fundraiser. Half the money will go to Rudham Ward, the QEH children’s ward, with the remainder going to the Cancer Care Treatment Fund.
Justyna said: “It was really lovely to meet the nursing staff and to hear from them what a difference that donations like ours can make. Our friends and family are committed to raising money, as Mark had wished. This is our third donation and I know our son Oliver, who was born at The QEH, will be very proud that events in memory of his dad will help other people.”
Esther Dorken, Interim Head of Midwifery and Nursing and Kerry Fletcher, Deputy Head of Midwifery accepted the Rudham Ward share saying: “It’s so lovely to be able to meet in person Justyna and to thank her and her supporters for thinking of our young patients. Every donation to our charity really makes a difference to patients, allowing us to purchase items not funded by the NHS, whether that’s activities and toys for our poorly children or innovative pieces of equipment that improve patient care.”
Ash George, who is Charge Nurse at the QEH cancer unit was also at the presentation: She said: “Hearing from Justyna about the motivation around the fundraising was heart-warming. We all recognise that our hospital is such a big part of the community in West Norfolk and fundraisers like Justyna’s not only show the enduring love for someone who’s passed away but also the great affection for The QEH.”
