Local people unite to move against cancer

People affected by cancer have laced up their trainers to take on Norfolk’s first event 5K Your Way Move Against Cancer event.

Organised by Queen Elizabeth Hospital cancer patient Sophie Hansell, the event which took place on the last Saturday in February (24.02.24) at Sandringham is a monthly support group with a difference.

It encourages those living with and beyond cancer, their families and friends, and people working in cancer services to come together to benefit not only from fresh air and physical activity but also the emotional support.

Anyone interested in joining the next Sandringham 5K Your Way group is encouraged to register here. The free monthly event, with free of charge car parking, will take place on the last Saturday of every month from 8.45am with the next one scheduled on 30 March.

Sophie, 40, from Narborough near King’s Lynn, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in September 2021 and has undergone chemotherapy and surgery at the King’s Lynn hospital and radiotherapy at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Sophie said: “The launch event on Saturday was amazing and around 30 people turned up which was great to see.

“I spoke to so many people who have either been directly affected by cancer like me or have a loved one who has had cancer. The idea of the event was to allow people to focus on what they can do and what they can control, rather than what you cannot, which can be what a cancer diagnosis feels like.”

She added: “It was brilliant to see people walking together, talking and creating new supportive friendships. We’re already looking forward to the next event and hope to see even more people join in.”

Ends.
