The station, which has been based at The Trust since it opened in 1980, prides itself on being a free-of-charge source of entertainment and news for patients, staff, and visitors to the hospital.
The station is run entirely by a small team of volunteers, one of whom has been part of the team for an impressive 48 years, and music is broadcast 24-hours a day, seven days a week, including Christmas Day. The station boasts an eclectic playlist, combining music from the 1950’s right up to modern day. More than 55,000 hours were listened to during 2023.
Linda Woods, Associate Director of Patient Experience at The QEH, said: “Hospital Radio Lynn means so much to our patients. I know from speaking to many of them that they find the radio a source of comfort and distraction in what can be a very unsettling time for them.
“It is a valuable resource and one we are so very thankful to the volunteers who give up their time to enable our patients to enjoy hospital radio.”
David Llewellyn, chair of Hospital Radio Lynn, said: “Celebrating our 50th anniversary is a monumental achievement for Hospital Radio Lynn and the broader community we serve. I’m incredibly proud of our journey, our resilience through the pandemic’s impact, and our community’s unwavering support.”
Wayne Fysh, who has volunteered at the station more than 11 years will be starting the celebrations with a day of live broadcasting from 7am. The station is taking requests for songs and those that call in with a song request will be entered into a draw to win an Amazon Echo Dot.
Listeners can tune into Hospital Radio Lynn online at hospitalradiolynn.org.uk, via Alexa, or from within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
