Expert team appointed to lead New QEH design

A team of experts, who specialise in healthcare design across the country, have been selected to drive forward plans for a new Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in King’s Lynn.

The design team, led by architects BDP will develop the designs of what the New QEH will look like.

The appointment of the project design team, following a competitive tender process lasting several months, is a major milestone in the delivery a New QEH, which is planned to open in 2030. These key appointments will ensure King’s Lynn gets the hospital it needs for the future.

This announcement comes after two significant milestone moments for the Trust’s new hospital plans, with the Government confirming the QEH project would not be included in its review of the New Hospital Programme and QEH Board approval of the Strategic Outline Case (SOC), which explains why a new hospital is needed and how it will be delivered. The New QEH will be built on the current site, on the main car park, after an extensive assessment of six possible sites.

The appointed design team will be:

  • BDP – who bring international expertise in clinical effectiveness, efficiency and healthcare design.
  • Structural and Civil Engineers WSP who are technical experts in comprehensive design and sustainable solutions.
  • Mott MacDonald who will lead as Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health Engineers using their wealth of experience in technical expertise and digital innovation.

Peter Cox, Programme Director – New QEH, said: “We are thrilled to have appointed such an impressive, experienced design team. This group have a wealth of experience in healthcare design for major national and international projects. I am confident they have the expertise to create plans for a new hospital that our local community can be proud of.

“We know just how much The QEH means to our patients and staff and this is another positive step forward in our journey towards making plans a reality by 2030.”

Max Martin, Principal at BDP, said: “We’re excited to be leading the design team for this transformative project for King’s Lynn and the surrounding area. We design healthcare facilities with people in mind but crucially, with people involved. Working closely with hospital staff, patients, NHS England and the New Hospital Programme team, our goal is to create a supportive, healing environment, nestled amongst the trees in this historic, rural setting.”

Matthew Palmer, Structural Director, WSP, said: “WSP is delighted to bring our healthcare expertise to support the Queen Elizabeth Hospital team in developing the design of this truly exciting once in a generation new hospital development for the residents of King’s Lynn and the wider area”.

Rhydian Morgan, Health Sector Lead at Mott MacDonald, said: “Mott MacDonald is pleased to be bringing our technical expertise and breadth of experience across the health sector to the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital which is set to be transformational for both patients and staff. We understand the significance of the project to people and communities across Norfolk, and we’re pleased to be supporting and enabling this step change in care delivery.”
