On Saturday, 25 January 2025, His Majesty King Charles III, patron to The QEH, paid a surprise visit to those affect by cancer at Move Against Cancer’s 5K Your Way at Sandringham parkrun.
It was a special day celebrating its one year anniversary of the walk, jog or run and was especially memorable with the surprise attendance of His Majesty, who was diagnosed with cancer last year.
Andy Doughty, hospital volunteer and former cancer patient, regularly puts on his walking shoes to take part.
Andy, who was a finalist in the 2024 TeamQEH Awards, can often be found smiling and welcoming people at the hospital front desk or supporting patients in the Macmillan treatment rooms.
Andy said: “I never thought my cancer journey would lead me to meeting The King. It was just a normal Saturday for me and then all of a sudden The King was joining us! I spoke to him about my cancer and treatment and it was great to meet him. I can’t believe what an uplifting experience it was. “
The Move Against Cancer event takes place on the last Saturday of the month aims to support people living with and beyond cancer including their family, friends and health care professionals. It focuses on physical benefits along with a peer support group for those affected by cancer.
