Physiotherapist wins hospital award for giving patient ‘ability to return to my life’

Specialist Physiotherapist Gavin Brooke wins the latest Outstanding Contribution to Living Our Values Award.

Last month, Gavin Brooke Specialist Physiotherapist in the Rehabilitation Team was presented with a Living Our Values Outstanding Contribution Award by Chief Nurse Pippa Street.

Gavin Brooke Specialist Physiotherapist

Gavin was nominated by a patient who he had looked after for three months. The nomination said:

“During my three-month inpatient stay, Gavin consistently went above and beyond to advocate for the medical treatment and management that I needed. His expertise in my condition, and his willingness to share this knowledge with myself and my family, was invaluable in aiding my recovery. Gavin’s ability to understand what I needed to engage in therapy, both physically and psychologically, contributed towards building my trust and engagement with physical rehabilitation.

“Gavin’s commitment to providing support was not limited to just myself; Gavin would regularly ‘check in’ with my close family members to ensure that their wellbeing as caregivers was acknowledged and supported, as well as facilitating joint sessions where he was able to provide my caregivers with practical ways to support my rehabilitation.

“I believe that Gavin’s direct and indirect management of my condition and treatment is a huge contributing factor in how I have recovered – the ability to return to my life as an independent young professional is owed to Gavin.

“Gavin is a credit to QEHKL and Physiotherapists and my family and I will never be able to show the magnitude of our gratitude.”

Gavin Brooke and Pippa Street

Pippa Street, Chief Nurse at The QEH, praised Gavin for his hard work and dedication to patient and family care. She said: “Gavin should be very proud of this nomination. It shows how important it is for us to remember the difference we make to our patients and how much it means when we are able to help them get back to their normal life after illness. This is hugely well deserved, congratulations Gavin.”

Gavin, who’s worked at The QEH for three years said: “I’m honoured to be nominated and receive this award, I remember this patient well and I am pleased I have been able to help them. It is thanks to the support of my team that I am able to do my job well. This allows me to dedicate time and commitment to my patients and their families.”

At The QEH we believe that it is important for every member of Team QEH to be recognised when they go above and beyond their duties, whether this be a clinical or non-clinical role. If you know somebody working at the Trust who demonstrates our values of Kindness, Wellness and Fairness in their actions please do nominate them a ‘Living Our Values’ awards here.

The monthly Living Our Values award is part of The QEH’s reward and recognition programme which is funded by The QEHKL Charity.
