The funds, raised through various local fundraising efforts, will be used to purchase items suggested by families who have used the unit, including footstools and other small additions that will ensure each of the five en-suite rooms feel more homely and practical. These enhancements aim to create a more comfortable and calming environment for patients and their loved ones in the new purpose-built unit as they enter their last days of life.
Opened in December 2024, the Peddars Way Unit provides dedicated end-of-life care in a calm, dignified and private setting away from busy hospital wards. It was funded through the QEHKL Charity with additional support from the hospital’s League of Friends. The latest donation reflects an ongoing effort to respond to feedback from families and improve the overall experience for patients and their loved ones.
Rotary Club President Charles Howard-Vyse visited the unit recently to see how the donation will be used. The gift holds personal significance for him following the passing of both his father-in-law and mother-in-law at the hospital.
“The care Roger received was exceptional,” Charles shared, “but had Peddars Way been available, it would have offered our family a peaceful, private space to spend those final moments together. Supporting this project is an honour. It will give families the environment they need to say goodbye with dignity and love.”

Emma Clark, Consultant Nurse for Palliative Care at The QEH, expressed her gratitude, “We are so thankful for this donation from the Rotary Club of Swaffham. It will help us create a more welcoming space where families can find some comfort during an incredibly emotional time. Our work is a privilege, and contributions like this make a tangible difference.”
Samantha Taylor, Charity Manager at The QEH, added, “This kind gift from the Rotary Club will help us provide those thoughtful touches that mean so much and make the unit as comforting as possible.”
The Rotary Club of Swaffham, which raises funds through events including a golf day in July and an art exhibition in October, is part of Rotary International, a global network of over two million members dedicated to service and community impact. Their support of the Peddars Way Unit reflects Rotary’s mission of compassion and lasting change.
Every donation – no matter the size – helps enhance the experience for those receiving care in the unit. If you would like to support this meaningful project, please contact the QEHKL Charity Team at Charity@qehkl.nhs.uk or visit the QEHKL Charity website to donate.
