The QEH pledges commitment to NHS Sexual Safety Charter

The QEH has launched a new programme to tackle sexual harassment and abuse.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn (The QEH) has signed the Sexual Safety Charter, which is a formal commitment to a zero-tolerance stance on all unwanted, inappropriate, and harmful sexual behaviours towards staff.

Sexual safety encompasses a range of behaviours – from inappropriate sexualised language and harassment to sexual assault and rape. Some behaviours may be unlawful; others may breach professional or organisational standards. The Trust is committed to preventing and addressing all forms of sexual misconduct, regardless of their legal classification.

As part of this work, The QEH is improving ways to help staff recognise, report, and prevent sexual harassment. These include enhanced training, clear reporting pathways, and tailored support services.

Chris Bown, Interim Executive Managing Director, said: “Everyone deserves to feel safe. Whether they are receiving care, treating patients, or visiting loved ones. This is a vital step in protecting our people and standing firmly against all forms of abuse.”

John Syson, Director of People, added: “By signing the NHS Sexual Safety Charter, we’re affirming our commitment to creating a safe and respectful workplace. Experiencing sexual abuse or misconduct at work can be deeply distressing and isolating. We must ensure that all staff feel empowered to speak up and absolutely confident that they will be heard, supported, and protected.”

The QEH joins a growing number of NHS Trusts committed to fostering a culture where sexual harassment is actively prevented and swiftly addressed – ensuring that healthcare environments are safe for everyone.
