Step by step, NHS workers are making a difference for end-of-life patients

A determined group of 28 staff from The QEH – along with their family and friends – are taking on an inspiring 26-mile charity walk from Swaffham to Holme-next-the-Sea to raise funds for the hospital’s Peddars Way Unit

The scenic route, aptly named Peddars Way, after the ancient trail through Norfolk and Suffolk, mirrors the name and ethos of the unit it supports – symbolising care, dignity, and the final journey through life, surrounded by peace and nature.

The challenge has already attracted overwhelming support, with donations surpassing the initial £3,000 target to reach an impressive £4,545 – and rising! All money raised will go directly to enhancing the patient environment in the Peddars Way Unit, making it even more comfortable for individuals and families during life’s most difficult moments.

Karen McGuire, Deputy Chief Nurse, at The QEH, said: “I’m so proud of our incredible QEH colleagues who are taking on this inspiring challenge. Their dedication, alongside the generous backing of our communities, is truly heart-warming. Every step they take will help us provide even more comfort and dignity for patients in our Peddars Way Unit. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved – your support is making a real and lasting difference.”

The Peddars Way Unit opened in December 2024, made possible entirely by public donations and support from the King’s Lynn Hospitals League of Friends Charity. This purpose-built space is designed to give patients a peaceful, home-like setting in their final days, especially for those too unwell to transfer to a hospice or return home.

With five tranquil en-suite rooms – each named Blossom, Lavender, Meadow, Oak, and Willow – the unit was created with privacy, compassion, and dignity at its core. Since opening, it has received glowing feedback from families, who describe the care as “absolutely brilliant” and the space as “an asset to the hospital.”

Funds raised through this walk will allow The QEH to continue adding special touches – calming décor, soft furnishings, and peaceful surroundings – that help transform each room into a truly comforting sanctuary.
