First anniversary marked for diagnostic centre

This week the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in King’s Lynn celebrates one year since it opened its doors to its first patients.

Since opening on 30 September 2024, more than 35,000 scan appointments for outpatients have taken place using the facilities cutting-edge technology, providing a range of specialist scans including MRI and CT scans as well as X-ray and Ultrasound imaging used for diagnosing and monitoring of a wide range of conditions.

QEH CDC team celebrate one year in new building

The CDC, which can be found at the entrance to The QEH site, has significantly increased the number of scans available for outpatients in need of diagnostic testing. This means patients being referred from other healthcare facilities such as GP practices are waiting less time for an appointment.

Samantha Newton, Radiology Manager at The QEH said: “One year on, this facility is making a real difference to patients waiting for diagnostic testing.

“Having access to new state of the art imaging equipment not only enhances the image quality of the scans we provide but helps to develop the skills within our team. We are incredibly proud of all our Radiology colleagues, both those in our main hospital and CDC, providing this additional outpatient capacity. Our team always give patients a fast and efficient service right from their appointment set-up through to the service they receive on the day.”

The QEH CDC is one of three such facilities opened at the three acute hospitals in Norfolk and Waveney following the investment of £85.9 million by the Department of Health and Social Care. The James Paget University Hospitals opened their CDC in July 2024 and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals opened in February 2025.

The QEH CDC is one element of the current estate that will remain in use when the new hospital opens in 2032.

Chris Bown, Interim Executive Managing Director at The QEH, said: “Our fantastic state-of-the-art Community Diagnostic Centre is one example of how we are investing in our current estate ahead of plans for the New QEH in 2032.

“It is a modern, bright and light facility that importantly allows access to tests quicker but also improves patient experience. Well done to our team who have made this possible.”
