The £20,000 project, funded by the hospital’s League of Friends charity, will allow trainees and fellows in the gynaecology department to practise key procedures such as hysteroscopy and laparoscopy in a realistic, safe, and controlled environment.
These advanced simulators replicate a wide range of diagnostic and surgical scenarios, giving trainees immediate feedback and performance data to help them refine their skills. This innovative approach supports faster learning, greater confidence, and improved safety for patients.
Mr Alin-Ioan Ciopec, Consultant Gynaecologist, specialist in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Advanced Hysteroscopy, is the driving force behind the acquisition and commented on the importance of this investment:
“This is a pivotal moment for the department – the ability to practice complex procedures like laparoscopic hysterectomies or hysteroscopic myomectomies repetitively and with objective feedback is invaluable.
“As the first Consultant Gynaecologist to secure this technology for the team, I believe this purchase reflects a clear commitment to minimally invasive surgery (MIS) excellence and, most importantly, enhances the level of care we can offer our patients through highly skilled surgeons.”
He added: “The QEH has recently achieved teaching hospital status and I am sure this will attract more trainees in the area.”
The simulators will now be an essential part of the gynaecology department’s training programme, ensuring that surgeons can build their skills before operating in theatre.
Rebecca Martin, Medical Director at The QEH, added: “This investment highlights our ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and patient safety. Simulation-based training allows our surgeons to refine their skills in a safe environment, which ultimately improves outcomes for our patients.”
Penny Hipkin, Chair of the League of Friends charity, said: “The League of Friends is proud to fund this important development. Supporting projects that directly enhance training and patient care is at the heart of what we do, and we’re delighted to help The QEH continue leading the way in innovation and excellence.”
The introduction of this technology reinforces The QEH’s position as a forward-thinking teaching hospital, committed to innovation, education, and providing the highest standards of patient care.
