The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme is a UK Government programme that recognises organisations for their commitment to supporting serving personnel, veterans, reservists and their families. The Gold Award is the highest level of recognition and is reserved for employers who actively champion defence across their organisation and wider networks.
This achievement follows The QEH’s successful review as a Veteran Aware organisation in October 2025, recognising its continued commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate and equitable care for members of the Armed Forces community and their families.
The revalidation highlights the Trust’s:
- Strong partnerships with local organisations and charities
- Dedicated network of Armed Forces Champions
- Ongoing collaboration with RAF Marham, including recruitment engagement
- Plans to introduce work experience placements for local cadets
Chris Bown, Interim Executive Managing Director at The QEH, said: “Revalidating our Defence ERS Gold Award is a tremendous achievement and a reflection of our long-standing commitment to the Armed Forces community. We are proud to support those who serve and have served, both as patients and as valued members of our workforce.”
The Trust employs colleagues from across the Armed Forces community, whose experience, leadership and values continue to strengthen Team QEH.
Simon Lonsdale, Head of Information Governance and former Royal Air Force Policeman, said: “Having served in the Armed Forces, I know how important it is to feel understood and supported when transitioning into civilian employment. The QEH’s continued recognition through the Defence ERS Gold Award shows that this support is not just a policy, but something that is genuinely embedded in our culture. I’m proud to work for an organisation that recognises the skills, values and experiences the Armed Forces community brings.”
Heather Atkin, Discharge Coordinator and former member of the Royal Air Force Police, added: “The QEH’s commitment to the Armed Forces community is evident every day, both in how we care for patients and how we support colleagues with military backgrounds. Revalidating the Gold Award is a real testament to the Trust’s inclusive approach and its determination to ensure service personnel, veterans and their families feel respected, valued and supported.”
The QEH’s Armed Forces Forum meets monthly and welcomes participation from staff, veterans and local organisations who wish to contribute ideas or support ongoing projects.
The Trust was first awarded the Defence ERS Gold Award in 2020 and continues to embed support for the Armed Forces community across employment, care delivery and community engagement.
