The new bus stop will be positioned on the right hand side of the The QEH entrance road, opposite the Community Diagnostic Centre. Moving it closer to the main Gayton Road will improve access for buses, allowing faster entry and exit and creating a one way route through the site for all bus services.
This relocation is a key early milestone in the wider New QEH programme. It will enable construction of the new multi-storey car park to begin later this year. Once complete, the existing main car park will be released to allow construction of a new hospital.
Peter Cox, Project Director – New QEH, said: “Relocating the bus stop is a small but important step that allows us to move forward with the multi-storey car park later this year. It is encouraging to see months of planning translating into visible progress. Every milestone brings us closer to a new hospital for the people of West Norfolk.”
As a Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) hospital, The QEH has been prioritised by the Government to be rebuilt by the national New Hospital Programme. As part of the Norfolk and Waveney Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group the James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) is also part of the programme and is progressing plans for a new hospital in Gorleston.
To support the bus stop works, some car parking spaces will be relocated to the newly created area beside the former helipad, allowing closure of a small number of spaces at the top of the site. Drop-off points at the Community Diagnostic Centre and Arthur Levin Day Surgery Unit will remain open. The Trust’s patient buggy will continue to operate throughout the week to support patients and visitors with mobility needs.
