Chris joined an outstanding line-up of local heroes from across West Norfolk, alongside three other QEH finalists, at a special celebration awards event hosted by Your Local Paper at King’s Lynn corn Exchange.
Nominated across a range of clinical, professional and charitable categories, QEH staff and supporters highlighted the exceptional care, compassion and community spirit that underpin the hospital’s work.
Chris, who works in the QEH Day Surgery Unit, was named winner of the Triumph Over Adversity Award. The award recognises individuals who have faced significant personal challenges and transformed their experiences into something positive for others. Chris was commended for his resilience and dedication to paediatric care, inspiring colleagues and families alike. Commenting on taking top prize Chris said: “I’m just absolutely overwhelmed by this. It is such a privilege to be nominated, but to win is phenomenal. I love my job, I’m so lucky. I know I have had cancer, but I am lucky to be able to help other people. At one point it was a possibility that cancer could take away my voice, now I use that voice to advocate for other people.”
The other QEH representatives also celebrated as finalists on the night were Leanne Howling, Maggie Drew, The League of Friends, and The Breast of Friends. All recognised for their outstanding contributions to their local hospital.
Leanne Howling, Paediatric Nurse on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), was shortlisted for Health Professional/Carer of the Year. Reflecting on her nomination, Leanne said: “It has been a long but rewarding road to get here. I started at The QEH 14 years ago as a housekeeper, and to progress this far in my career is already amazing. To then be publicly recognised for my hard work and achievements really is the cherry on the top.”
Local fundraiser Maggie Drew was a finalist for Fundraiser of the Year. Maggie began fundraising following the loss of her mother, who suffered a stroke and received care at QEH West Raynham Ward. Inspired by the exceptional treatment her mother received, Maggie channelled her grief into helping others affected by stroke. Speaking about her fundraising journey, Maggie said: “This all started because of Mum. I wanted to raise money to help others who have had a stroke. The team at QEH are fantastic. We’ve raised a significant amount so far, had an amazing time doing it, and connected with so many people along the way. We’re hoping to reach £30,000 by the end of the year.”
In the Community Champion/Group category, QEH was represented by two powerful fundraising groups: The League of Friends and The Breast of Friends.
The League of Friends, who donated more than £240,000 to the hospital in 2025 alone, were named runners-up in their category. The charity funds vital equipment and facility upgrades, supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who run the shop in the hospital’s main foyer. The nomination came less than 24 hours after the reopening of the newly refurbished Roxburgh Children’s Centre Garden. Chairperson Penny Hipkin, also a former nurse, said: “We are thrilled to have been nominated, but to be named finalists is truly special. It’s heartwarming to be involved in so many wonderful projects across the Trust that improve patient care. This recognition shows what can be achieved when we all work together.”
Also runners up, The Breast of Friends, a Community Interest Company, formed in 2022 by local women who bonded while receiving breast cancer treatment at The QEH. The group has raises funds for cancer services through a wide range of creative events, from drag brunches to skydives. Chair Trustee Claire Ling said: “To be recognised and nominated so early in our journey is incredible. As patients ourselves, we bring a unique perspective and understand how small details can make a huge difference. The Breast of Friends isn’t just about fundraising, it’s about support, connection and reminding people that they are not alone during treatment. Together, we are making a real difference.”
Dawn Collins, Interim Chief Nurse at The QEH, said: “I’m so proud of all of our finalists in these awards. They make such a difference to patients and our staff. These awards demonstrate how important our hospital and the care we provide is to the community.
“Well done to Chris for his award win, I know he makes time in hospital as positive as possible for children who need surgery. Thank you Chris for the difference you make.”
