Following inputs from staff and patients, the donation was used to extend the licensing of the hospital’s Reminiscence Interactive Therapy and Activities (RITA) devices. These machines ensure patients living with dementia can continue to benefit from the innovative technology during their hospital stay.
For many people living with dementia, being admitted to hospital can be a confusing and distressing experience. The RITA devices help provide comfort, stimulation and meaningful engagement, supporting patients’ wellbeing while they are receiving care.
Featuring a large 24-inch touchscreen, the specialised systems offer a wide range of activities designed to encourage interaction, reminiscence and enjoyment. Patients can listen to music, watch familiar films, explore photographs, enjoy poetry, play interactive games and take part in activities such as bingo, karaoke and virtual colouring.
These activities are carefully designed to stimulate memories, encourage conversation and reduce feelings of anxiety and isolation. By helping patients reconnect with familiar experiences and interests, the devices can improve mood, support communication and create positive interactions between patients, staff, volunteers and loved ones.
The systems can be used on a one-to-one basis or in group settings, helping patients remain active and engaged during their stay. They also provide valuable opportunities for carers and family members to connect with loved ones through shared activities and memories.
The extension of the RITA licences has been made possible thanks to the incredible support of local people who donated to the QEHKL Charity’s Dementia Care Appeal. The original appeal was completed in 2023, but this generous legacy gift means its impact will continue to be felt by patients and families for years to come. Their generosity is helping to create a more dementia-friendly environment across the hospital and improve the experience of patients when they need care most.
Dr Katie Honney, Care of the Elderly Consultant and Clinical Lead for Dementia Care at The QEH, said: “Being admitted to hospital can be particularly frightening for people living with dementia, especially when they are away from familiar surroundings and routines. The RITA devices help create moments of reassurance, connection and joy, whether that’s through a favourite song, a familiar photograph or simply encouraging conversation. We see first-hand the difference they make to our patients and their families, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone whose generosity has enabled us to continue providing this valuable resource.”
Dawn Collins, Chief Nurse at The QEH, added: “Charitable donations allow us to go above and beyond what NHS funding alone can provide, helping us enhance the care and experience of our patients. This generous gift means more people living with dementia will continue to benefit from technology that supports their wellbeing, encourages meaningful interaction and helps make their time in hospital a little less daunting. On behalf of everyone at The QEH, thank you to every supporter who has helped make this possible.”
