It’s a double celebration for Feltwell as they make the RCN Awards 2023 shortlist!

The QEH further celebrates after Feltwell Ward is shortlisted for another national award and enters the finalists of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Awards 2023 Trust of the Year Award for their delivery of the ‘Let’s Get Moving’ initiative.

This is a double celebration for the team after they were recently announced as being shortlisted in two categories for the prestigious 2023 Nursing Times Awards for the delivery of this important campaign, which was implemented Trust-wide to inspire teams to develop innovative ideas for preventing patient deconditioning and to establish a ‘joyful’ workplace environment.

Explaining what patient deconditioning means, Karon Strong, Head of Nursing for the Division of Medicine and lead facilitator behind the Let’s Get Moving initiative, said: “As an in-patient in hospital, a person will be much less active than normal, and this inactivity leads to ‘deconditioning’, which causes people to lose fitness or muscle tone, especially through lack of exercise.

“This in turn leads to delayed discharges, increased risks of hospital acquired complications and leaves patients in a state of excessive dependency, unable to return home in time.”

Data from NHS England shows that within the first seven days of admission, inpatients experience reduced muscle strength by up to 10% and reduced circulation by up to 25%.

Speaking about the RCN shortlisting for the Trust of the Year Alice Webster, Chief Executive at QEH, said: “This is such a fantastic achievement and very well deserved. I am so proud of all of our teams across the Trust who have got behind this important campaign in which Feltwell are leading the way.”

“All disciplines across Feltwell Ward and throughout the Trust have united with a clear purpose and are motivated to share innovative ideas and embrace new methods of working. Patients and relatives have also been crucial in developing ideas for ward-based activities which were implemented such as bingo, painting, drawing and crosswords.”

2023 saw the highest ever number of entries for the RCN Nursing Awards as nurses, healthcare professionals, managers and teams entered in their hundreds, and being shortlisted demonstrates Team QEH’s commitment, dedication and compassion to patient care and experience.

The winners will be revealed on Friday 10 November at Liverpool Cathedral, where the RCN will celebrate the outstanding efforts and achievements made by the whole nursing community.

Sam Jude, Ward Manager of Feltwell, said: “I am so proud of everyone who has worked so hard to make this important campaign a success. This is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved.”
