New hospital bus stop opens as first step towards future car park

A new bus stop at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn opened today (Tuesday 26 May), marking the first visible step in plans to deliver a new multi-storey car park.
The new bus stop at The QEH is now open

The relocated stop sits closer to the main hospital entrance on Gayton Road, opposite the Community Diagnostic Centre, improving access for buses as well as allowing faster entry and exit to the site. The QEH patient buggy also has a new stop next to the relocated bus stop to support patients who need support getting around the site.

From today, all bus services will use the new stop. The new bus stop features a virtual timetable board with live updates on bus services which also has an audio button for passengers who need it.

The change forms part of a wider programme of enabling works to prepare the site for a new multi-storey car park, which recently received Government approval. The car park is a key project that will support the building of a new hospital by freeing up land on the current main car park for the new hospital building.

The new facility will provide more than 1,300 parking spaces across six parking levels. Preparation of the site for the main works will begin in early June, with construction of the MSCP building starting at the end of July.

The new bus stop will follow a one-way system to support safe access and there be a no access area for other vehicles.
Peter Cox, Project Director – New QEH, said: “Relocating the bus stop is a small but important step that allows us to move forward with the multi-storey car park, for which we have received the final approval by the Government.

“It is encouraging to see months of planning and work showing such encouraging progress. Every milestone brings us closer to a new hospital for the people of West Norfolk.”

The new stop comes as local bus company Lynx have released plans to add a new route connecting the Woottons and Castle Reach to The QEH and Hardwick.
