Publisher brings joy of reading to patients in hospital

King’s Lynn publisher, Badger Learning, has pledged to give away of £10,000 worth of books to local good causes to celebrate the National Year of Reading.

A local book publisher renewed its support for The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in King’s Lynn for the second year with a generous pledge that puts the joy of stories directly into the hands of patients.

In celebration of the National Year of Reading local independent publisher, Badger Learning, has committed to donating £10,000 worth of books to local good causes. The QEH is on their list of beneficiaries, helping children and adults alike to rediscover the joy, comfort and proven benefits of reading whilst in hospital.

Badger Learning’s mission is to spread the message of the lasting value of a good book and the vital role books play in learning, wellbeing and recovery. From sparking imagination to providing a calm moment of escape, books remain one of life’s simplest yet most powerful tools.

As part of the donation, the team has provided a wide selection of children’s books to services across the hospital. Children attending appointments or staying on wards can enjoy reading during their visit and are often given a book to take home – a small gift that helps build positive associations with care and supports emotional wellbeing.

Badger Learning has also donated books to help establish a new aphasia library at The QEH, designed to support patients recovering from stroke or brain injury, helping them rebuild speech, reading and understanding skills as part of their rehabilitation.

Nina Bueno del Carpio, from Badger Learning, said: “Badger Learning are delighted to be a regular supporter of our local hospital, especially during the National Year of Reading. One of our pledges as a publisher is to donate £10,000 worth of books to good causes, and we’re proud to work with Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Staff have told us how much the children love our books, whether they’re reading independently or being read to, and it’s wonderful to see the impact this has.”

QEHKL Charity Manager Rebecca McMinn added: “Books really are a magical tool in our patients’ development and recovery. These small milestones, enjoying a story, recognising words, sharing reading time, help pave the way along the path to recovery. We are truly touched that Badger Learning has chosen to support us and our patients.”

Chris Harrison, Lead Nurse for Paediatric Day Surgery, said: “We are so thankful. We rely on donations for all the toys and books we have on our wards and units. It is because of kind donations like these that we can make the experience of children and young people coming to hospital calmer, more pleasant and less scary. We truly are appreciative.”
