David and Caroline Drew celebrated 60 years of marriage in June surrounded by family and friends, including 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, at a special anniversary gathering.
Rather than receiving traditional gifts, the couple asked guests to make donations to The QEH’s Cancer Care and Treatment Unit. Thanks to the generosity of family and friends, they raised an impressive £520.
Caroline, who has been receiving treatment for an incurable form of cancer for several years, said: “It’s just nice to give back. The team here are wonderful and take such good care of the patients.”
When asked about the secret to a long and happy marriage, David joked: “I worked away a lot,” before affectionately squeezing Caroline’s hand.
The funds raised will support the Physical Activity Assessment Programme (PAAP), an award-winning initiative delivered in partnership between the Cancer Wellbeing team and Alive West Norfolk. The programme, which has recently secured its fifth year of funding from QEHKL Charity, plays a vital role in helping cancer patients improve their physical and emotional wellbeing.
Eileen Murphy, Lead Cancer Nurse at The QEH, said: “We are truly grateful for every donation we receive. Knowing that patients and their families want to give back to support others is incredibly heartwarming.
“David and Caroline’s generosity will help us continue supporting patients through initiatives such as PAAP, making a real difference to the wellbeing of people living with and beyond cancer.”
As they celebrated six decades together, David and Caroline also created a lasting legacy that will help support future cancer patients and their families across West Norfolk.
