The hospital’s IPC team has been nominated for its ‘Swarm’ programme under the Infection Prevention and Control category. The Swarm programme reviews how healthcare associated infections are investigated and prevented meaning improvements can be made to patient care.
The nurse-led programme targets wards where an infection has been reported, bringing together clinical teams within seven days, to allow them to learn from the infection and put further safety measures in place.
The seven-day window allows these investigations to be completed in a timely way and provides a learning exercise for all staff involved. These swarms have been praised as an excellent learning exercise that supports proactive work to deliver safer patient care.
Dawn Collins, Chief Nurse at The QEH, said: “To be recognised by the Nursing Times is a huge honour and speaks volumes about the incredible work happening at The QEH to prevent the spread of hospital acquired infections and ultimately improve care for our patients.
“The ‘Swarm’ programme provides an excellent opportunity for all our staff to share learnings and promotes a compassionate, engaged, and stronger workforce – which benefits our patients, their families, and the wider community. Congratulations to the entire Infection Prevention and Control team – we’re all very proud.”
The annual Nursing Times Awards celebrate excellence across the nursing community, recognising those who are delivering innovative, inclusive, and patient-focused care. Winners will be announced at a national ceremony held in London on Thursday 29 October.
This recognition marks another significant milestone in The QEH’s mission to provide patient centred care and builds on the Trust’s track record of national award nominations for excellence in nursing and innovation.
