Brian Moss, whose courage and commitment inspired family, friends and colleagues alike, took part in a sponsored Wing Walk at Wickenby Airfield last month to raise funds for The QEH’s Endoscopy Unit.
Brian was motivated to support the hospital after his wife received care from the Endoscopy Unit at the end of last year. Wanting to thank the staff who cared for his wife during a difficult and uncertain time, he set himself the challenge of raising money for the department.
The fundraising effort received fantastic support from Brian’s family and friends, as well as his colleagues at Bridge Hardware in Sutton Bridge. Alongside sponsorship donations, colleagues organised a World Cup Sweepstake to help raise additional funds. In a generous gesture, the winner of the sweepstake donated their £50 prize back into Brian’s fundraising total.
Reflecting on his motivation, Brian said: “I know so many people that have died through bowel cancer and having recently seen my wife undergo significant bowel operations at The QEH I wanted to raise money to thank all the amazing staff at the hospital for everything they did.”
Taking part in a Wing Walk, which sees participants strapped to the top wing of a flying aircraft while it performs a series of manoeuvres, required both courage and determination. Despite the challenge, Brian embraced the experience and successfully completed the flight, helping him surpass his fundraising target and raise an impressive £1,200.
The funds raised will support The QEH’s Endoscopy Unit, helping to support the team and enhance the care and experience of patients.
Helen Smith, Lead Nurse Manager for Theatre and Endoscopy at The QEH, expressed gratitude for Brian’s efforts: “We’re incredibly grateful to Brian for taking on such a fantastic challenge and raising this generous amount for our Endoscopy Unit. It means a great deal to know that the care his wife received inspired him to give something back to the team. We’d like to thank Brian, his family, friends and colleagues for their amazing support, which will help us continue to enhance the care and experience we provide for our patients.”
Brian’s fundraising achievement highlights the difference individuals can make when inspired by personal experiences and gratitude for NHS care. Through the support of his local community, family, friends and colleagues, he has made a valuable contribution to the hospital department that supported his wife when she needed it most.
By taking on a challenge well outside his comfort zone, Brian hopes his fundraising story will encourage others to support causes that are close to their hearts, whether through fundraising, volunteering or raising awareness.
